Leyel Hudson is the Co-Discipline Chair of ASL and Interpreter Training with Toby Welch at Lone Star College-CyFair near Houston. She is a professor, workshop presenter, and of course an interpreter as well!
Leyel began learning sign language in November of 1999 with Deaf students and interpreters at Lone Star College-North Harris in Houston. Prior to attending college, Leyel was an EMT and wanted to pursue a job in the medical field. After meeting Deaf students and falling in love with the culture, she changed her major and decided to join the interpreter training program on campus.
In addition to learning sign language on campus, Leyel went from being an atheist to becoming a Christian through the Deaf students and interpreters she met at Lone Star College. This means that her religious vocabulary was first learned in ASL and then in English. Leyel feels that she owes the Deaf community an enormous debt of gratitude because of this and devotes much of her time to religious interpreting as well as presenting workshops on religious topics.
Leyel has experience interpreting in a variety of settings including but not limited to theatre/music, VRS, education (Pre-K through postsecondary), medical, mental health, religious, governmental, conference, community, and more. She graduated from the Lone Star College System Interpreter Training Program and is currently pursing further education. Leyel holds a Texas Advanced Certification as well as the NIC. She is active in professional organizations at all levels but especially locally with the Greater Houston Interpreters for the Deaf.
